Letting Go of a Part of My Past
This coming week, Julia and I are going north to Indiana, to the home that my late father and mother shared with me and my four siblings until maturity or old age dictated our exodus.
The house was constructed in 1963, completed just a year before my first marriage. I therefore spent very little time in the house. My sister, who married earlier, spent no time living in the house. My three younger brothers lived there until marriage took them away from the homestead. Even though my siblings and I no longer lived there, we still considered it "home"
My father and mother shared the house together until my father's death in 1993, and was vacated in early 2006 when my mother was transferred to an assisted living facility. The house contained a lot of happy memories, Thanksgivings and Christmas celebrations, family reunions, and just weekend visits.
Hoping that our mother might be able to return to the house,, we kept it intact, ready for her. But that was not to be. As I mentioned in an earlier post, our mother lost her battle, and passed away on November 29, 2006, while Julia and I were on a Transatlantic cruise on the Celebrity Millennium.
I have made a couple of trips north since her death to assist in settling her estate. Julia and I are going back there this next week for an auction which will perhaps transfer the place we called home for so many years to someone else. According to the auctioneer, several people have expressed an interest in the property, so it might be sold at the auction. We will keep you informed.
